One of the games football fans always look forward to whenever the draw for the 2025/26 Premier League season is Chelsea vs Liverpool.
Liverpool FCLiverpool saw their unbeaten run come to an end following their defeat against Crystal Palace while Chelsea continued their poor run of form as they have failed to secure a win in their last three Premier League games against (Brentford, Manchester United and Brighton). However, the Blues came into this game with the confidence of having not lost to the Reds at Stamford Bridge in their last four meetings.
Chelsea were in a deep injury and suspension crisis, missing several key players in Wesley Fofana, Tosin Adarabioyo, Levi Colwill. Trevoh Chalobah was suspended, so Chelsea needed to rely on Josh Acheampong.
For Liverpool, their first‐choice goalkeeper Alisson was unavailable (injured), so Giorgi Mamardashvili made his first Premier League game as he started in goal the Champions.
Here are the five talking points from Chelsea vs Liverpool
(1) Moises Caicedo:
The Chelsea midfielder showed why he is one of the best midfielders in the world. Caicedo gave Chelsea the lead in the first half of the game which waa enough to boost his team’s confidence going into the rest of the game.
(2) Chelsea’s injury crisis:
Enzo Maresca has alot to worry about going into the international break as a most if his defenders are out injured which will be a big blow to his quest to achieving anything major as the season progresses. The latest to join the list of injured player is Berniot Badiashile and Josh Acheampong who were both substituted in the second half of the game.
(3) Willian Esteavo:
The young Brazilian sent every Chelsea fan at Stamford Bridge and all over the world on their feet when he scored the winning goal in the final two minutes of the game which is also his first official goal for the Blues. Esteavo became the second youngest Brazilian to score in the Premier League since Raphael scored for Manchester United.
The goal was enough to push the Blues into sixth place and ensured that Arsenal went into the international break top of the Premier League table.
(4) Mohamed Salah:
The Egyptian King as he is popularly called has failed to replicate the form which he showed last season since the beginning of this season (2025/26). Salah was unable to beat the Blues backline whenever he had to get past the midfield which is a headache for Arne Slot going into the rest of the season.
(5) Enzo Maresca:
Maresca showed the world why winning the Club World Cup was not a fluke with the way he set up his Chelsea team despite having most of his key players ( midfielders and defenders) injured. He was criticised by most Chelsea supporters in recent weeks but with back to back wins across all competitions, but this result might have cemented his place at the club’s manager for a while.
